 Becoming a Member

Home > Newcomers > Membership

Membership in St. Stephen’s is open to anyone who has been baptized with water in the name of the Trinity, whether as an infant or “at the age of reason.” Joining our our parish family also confers membership in the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A. and fellowship with the Anglican Communion, a global community of faith.

 Baptized Communicant

If you have not been baptized, or do not know whether you have, contact Father Scott or our church office to arrange a meeting. Fr Scott will explain the baptismal rite, answer any questions you have, and schedule your baptism. More information about the Sacrament of Baptism may be found here.

If you have been baptized, you can join St. Stephen’s by transferring your baptismal record from your former parish or denomination. This is a routine occurrence among churches, and our parish office will handle the paperwork. As a “baptized communicant,” you can join in our ministries, activities, committees, and worship, and you can make an annual financial commitment — a pledge — to support the parish mission and ministries.

 Confirmed Communicant

If you would like to become a confirmed communicant of our church, or if you have been confirmed in another Christian denomination and wish to join St. Stephen’s, you can attend our annual Inquirers’ Class. This class discusses what it means to be a Christian within the Episcopal Church. At the end of the course of instruction, attendees are confirmed or received into the church at the hands of our bishop.

If you have already been confirmed in another Episcopal parish, our church office will handle the transfer of membership.

As a “confirmed communicant,” your membership expands from that of a baptized communicant. You can now:

  • vote for members of the vestry at the annual parish meeting,
  • serve as a vestry member,
  • represent the parish at the annual council of the diocese, and
  • become licensed to perform certain worship roles.

To transfer, or to request Confirmation, Reception, or Reaffirmation, contact Father Scott or the office to arrange a meeting.
